Box Set Design vs Game Design Assignment

In this next adventurous assignment each of you will have the option to select one of the two assignments below:
1) Box Set Design
2) Game Design

The Box Set Design:
Create a box set for one of the following: 3 DVD movies, 3 music CDs, or 3 record albums
(artist or theme will be up to you, but I get final approval). If you would like, you could do a combination of DVDs and CDs (for instance, two DVD movies and one soundtrack CD).

Considering that many people digitally download much of their music and movies today, you will want to make this box set a special collectors’ edition that people will want to have as
a keepsake. Concept and packaging craft will be especially important for this project. You will also design a companion promotional t-shirt for your set and will have it printed.
Ideas:
1. Best of compilation from your favorite band or musical artist
2. A compilation set based on the theme of your choice (genre of music, music from a certain era, region of the world)
3. Movies starring specific actors
4. Movies from a specific director
5. Movies of a certain genre (war, westerns, sci fi, kung fu, etc.)
6. A movie trilogy

Visual design, creativity, concept, and craft all will play a part in how I grade your project. Be innovative and smart in your packaging decisions, and plan ahead so you can work with your materials and prototypes to make the best comp possible, because we will be photographing these. Also, you can work your promo t-shirt into the package design, but it can be separate also; you don’t want to make your box set make your set bulky or cumbersome by forcing the t-shirt into the package concept.

The packaging needs to be more than just getting three plastic CD or DVD cases and putting a cover into the case. I want you to create creative and well-crafted packaging. If you do happen to require pre-made DVD cases, I would suggest that you use the thin cases and make a box for them to slide into. Please do not use pre-made packaging materials where possible
- that defeats the purpose of the project. You can buy the CD/DVD spindles to adhere to your package design; I will find out where seniors ordered theirs last year.
Be sure to make the content on your box set rich and interesting. Think about bios of the band or director, anecdotes about the movies, and other types of info that would make a box set engaging. Also make it as realistic as possible by incorporating bar codes, copyright info, pricing, etc. I will show you some examples in class so you can see how last year’s
class approached this project.
Think “popular culture”, and design something that we’d all like to own!

Game Design:

A brand spanking new game is of your own creation.
It could be a board game or possibly an online game or even a card game.
Everything is open for this assignment as it might relate to popular culture. It could be game that ties into a certain period, person, band, event, or television show.
(ex. The RuPaul Drag Race Board Game; The Amazing Race Game, Karaoke Game, The Drive In Movie Game board, etc)

This game needs to be consistent with all games in that there are instructions/directions and items that are significant to the game itself.
